During the incident, two locomotives and five cars derailed. The cause of the accident was a switch switch.
A 17-year-old boy in the United States is accused of intentionally causing a train derailment so he could film it and post it on YouTube.
The boy's cellphone and digital recorder were confiscated after a BNSF Railway investigator obtained a search warrant on July 8 in connection with a previous train derailment in Bennett, Nebraska.
In the April 21 incident, two locomotives and five cars derailed. The train's conductor told a BNSF special agent that he was traveling eastbound and approaching the crossing when he saw a switch was out of alignment. This caused the locomotive to derail. The conductor said he tried to make an emergency stop, but nothing worked.
An investigator later discovered that the switch's lock was missing, indicating that it had been tampered with. A 17-year-old also showed up at the scene, asking about the derailment and saying he recorded the crash on his cell phone.
When investigators said they didn't know what caused the derailment, the boy said, "Apparently the switch was flipped the wrong way," court documents say.
Video taken by the teen shows the scene before, during and after the crash. Three days after the crash, a BNSF investigator obtained surveillance footage that showed a 1996 Buick Park Avenue in the area, with the teen exiting and walking toward the switch. He was later seen walking back to his car. The teen was also seen setting up a tripod.
The video of the derailment was posted on a YouTube account believed to be linked to the teen, an investigator said. According to a search warrant, the teen is charged with criminal mischief over $5,000. He has not been formally charged. He has not been arrested and his identity is being withheld because he is a minor.
The crime caused about $350,000 in damage to BNSF and Omaha Public Power District property.
