Climate activists glue themselves to the runway at Munich Airport (6 photos)
Police arrested eight climate activists who entered Munich Airport in southern Germany on Saturday. As a result, the air port was closed for some time, about 60 flights were cancelled.
The climate movement Letzte Generation has held similar protests in the past. Page X published a series of posts showing participants gluing themselves to the runway and unfurling posters.
The group later said six people entered the runway at 4:45 a.m. local time to block the planes. Activists criticized Berlin for subsidizing airlines and demanded that rail passenger transport be stimulated.
German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said security measures at the airport would be strengthened.
“Such criminal acts jeopardize air travel and harm climate protection because they only inspire contempt and anger,” she wrote on social media X. “The perpetrators must be brought to justice.”
German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said new laws are needed to provide criminal penalties for such actions, including imprisonment for up to two years. For now, such actions are classified as a minor offense.
An airport representative said the airport was closed for takeoffs and landings for almost two hours. 11 flights were redirected and about 60 were cancelled. The failure occurred during one of the busiest periods for the airport, second only to the Easter holidays.
