83-year-old bandit arrested again for bank robbery (4 photos)
A pensioner who served several decades in prison for a series of robberies has taken up his old ways. On February 14, Donald "Doc" Bennett carried out an armed raid on the Chase Bank in Chicago.
On Valentine's Day, a gunman and his accomplice stole $7,000 from a Chase bank.
Bennett and 55-year-old Edward Bienert were arrested at the latter's Illinois home last Wednesday. The accomplices fled the crime scene in a car they rented after presenting real documents. Therefore, the police quickly identified them.
As a young man, Bennett earned the nickname "the jumping bandit" for the way he jumped over bank counters. And his constant attribute was a wig.
He is currently suspected of 6 robberies since June last year.
“Six of the seven bank robberies have the following common features: the robber was a lone, masked, elderly white man armed with a handgun; the perpetrator demanded funds from the teller; and a rental car was used as a getaway vehicle,” the case file states.
So, on August 25, $30,886 was stolen from the Chase Bank in Oak Lawn.
In 1964, Bennett was sentenced to 24 years for bank robbery and armed assault.
In 1989 he was arrested again. When the officer asked the criminal about his plans after his release, he replied: “Jumping over bank counters again. However, it won’t be so easy.”
Edward Bienert admitted to the FBI that he participated in the Feb. 14 theft and that Bennett rented the getaway car. According to him, they met in prison in 2006.
