Yesterday, Sunday, on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the south of Iceland near the town of Grindavik, the Fagradalsfjall volcano began to erupt. This event has already been called the most powerful since 1973.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Icelandic town of Grindavik due to a volcanic eruption.
"Today's events are such that they will be remembered for a long time, and we are probably just seeing the beginning of a chain of events that will be difficult to cope with. ... This is the most serious volcanic eruption event in Iceland since January 1973," says the director of the department of civil protection. Iceland's Vidir Reynisson to RUV TV channel.
At first it was reported that only three houses on the outskirts of the city burned down - the lava came too close to them, and in other houses there was no hot water and electricity.
However, after a while it became known that the destruction was more significant.
Now the Red Cross branch in Iceland is collecting donations for residents who have lost their homes, and the country's Prime Minister has called for all possible assistance and support to the victims of the disaster.
However, a natural phenomena specialist from the Institute of Meteorology explains that this eruption is unlikely to eclipse the events of 1973, when the same volcano practically destroyed the entire city of Heimaey. All houses were then covered with black ash and damaged.
