Archaeologists discovered a stone penis during excavations at Meira towers, in the city of Rio de Vigo in northwestern Spain. The tower was demolished in 1476, during the Irmandino revolts, when the peasants revolted against the Spanish nobility. According to experts, the phallic symbolism of the stone was associated with violent uprisings of this era. Such symbolism commonly found in prehistoric artifacts, but it is less common in the finds of the Middle Ages - so the find surprised researchers.
It turned out to be a grindstone. With his help sharpened weapons in preparation for battle during Irmandino's war Spain. According to archaeologists from Arbore Arqueoloxía, these grindstones the stones from the Middle Ages had different shapes. Artifact found among others objects in the ruins of the tower, including pottery and stone spindles.
"The stone reflects the symbolic connection between violence, arms and courage. As we know, phallic symbolism existed in the Middle Ages, but is present in our culture and today," said archaeologist Dario Peña.
Excavations at the site of the destroyed tower began about 3 years ago back. At the first stage of excavations, archaeologists unearthed and restored tower, and only last year, experts began to dig out the surrounding tower territory. Archaeologists plan to continue work on this site, having previously obtained permission from the landowners in the local municipality of Moanya.
