The ship in question is the heavily publicized Villa Vie Odyssey, which offered a "lifetime cruise" package for passengers aged 55 and older. For some travelers, the vessel had truly become a home for the elderly, but now they are left stranded in Cambodia after being put ashore.

The luxury cruise liner Villa Vie Odyssey, operated by US-based Villa Vie Residences—which promised a non-stop voyage around the globe and sold "lifetime" tickets—failed to keep its promise. After two years at sea, the journey had to be cut short due to skyrocketing fuel prices.

Passengers were recently told they would have to disembark in Cambodia. The company pledged to arrange accommodations and cover their living expenses on land. Travelers were informed that continuing the voyage was impossible because fuel costs had soared from the budgeted $1,800 to an estimated $6,000–$8,000 per cabin per month.

Reportedly, several passengers had sold their homes and worldly possessions to spend the rest of their lives aboard the liner. Around 200 people were on board when the ship stopped. According to media reports, all of them had enrolled in long-term programs, effectively purchasing cabin ownership for 15 years with the option to renew once the vessel is replaced with a new one (scheduled in 15 years). The ship also carried passengers on the "Endless Horizons" lifetime plan, which guarantees automatic transfer to the replacement vessel after 15 years at no extra charge.

What lies ahead for this "never-ending" voyage remains unclear. Villa Vie Residences leadership has openly acknowledged that "no outcome is guaranteed." Over the next two months, the company plans to undergo restructuring and recapitalization to raise fresh capital and overhaul its business model.

The 200-meter-long Villa Vie Odyssey is designed to accommodate 600 passengers. A single round-the-world journey takes 3.5 years (1,301 days), visiting more than 425 ports across 147 countries on all seven continents. The most affordable package for a single global circumnavigation starts at $99,999 per person. That price covers food and beverages, including alcohol, housekeeping, laundry services, onboard entertainment, Starlink internet access, as well as port fees and taxes.

For those interested in long-term cabin ownership (15 years), the entry-level cabin starts at $129,999. On top of that, passengers must pay monthly service fees exceeding $3,000, which can climb up to $9,500 for higher-end cabins.

The Endless Horizons program, offering a "lifetime cruise," is primarily targeted at retirees and those approaching retirement age. Under this tier, a voyage costs $300,000 for a 55-year-old passenger, $280,000 for a 60-year-old, and $250,000 for a 65-year-old (dropping by $30,000 for each subsequent five-year age bracket). These passengers pay no monthly service fees, and unlike standard circumnavigation ticket holders, they receive a complimentary annual health checkup in addition to meals and entertainment.
