One of the main problems of cruise ships is not icebergs, but a large number of people and a confined space, turning the ship into an incubator for any infection.
The Norwegian Dawn cruise ship is stranded off the coast of Mauritius due to a suspected cholera outbreak among passengers. There are 1,026 crew members and 2,184 passengers on board the Norwegian tourist ship. 15 of them showed symptoms of cholera: fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
Therefore, the authorities of the paradise island do not allow the liner to dock in Port Louis until it becomes clear whether the problem is really cholera. Disembarkation of passengers was supposed to take place in Port Louis on February 25, but passengers will stay on board until the 27th at best - until doctors carry out the necessary tests on board.
“Due to the fact that local authorities require additional testing before entry, the Mauritian government has postponed the landing ... by two days, until February 27, 2024,” representatives of the Norwegian company Norge complained to reporters.
The cruise was reportedly scheduled for 12 days. The liner sailed from Cape Town (South Africa) on February 13. On the way to the final destination, Mauritius, the ship called at the port of Madagascar to pick up some of the tourists. It is assumed that these passengers brought the infection. Now the liner is located 5 kilometers from the coast of Mauritius. It is not yet known whether there are Russian citizens among the passengers. Nevertheless, Rospotrebnadzor is monitoring the epidemiological situation on the Norwegian cruise ship in order to prevent the introduction of a dangerous infection into Russia.
