AI to Inspect Cars at US Dealerships (3 Photos)
LaFontaine Automotive Group, which represents more than 60 brands, is rolling out UVeye automated inspection scanners across its network. The drive-through scanners will soon be installed at 43 of the group's Michigan locations. Initially, the service will be free for all drivers, regardless of their vehicle's make or where it was purchased.
The AI-powered UVeye system automatically inspects the vehicle's exterior for dents and scratches, checks the undercarriage for leaks and rust, and assesses tire wear as the car drives through the scanning portal. Machine learning software then analyzes the images and generates an interactive report with color-coded photos highlighting any problem areas.
The company claims the scan takes just a few seconds and delivers 96% accuracy. However, LaFontaine is not the first company to partner with UVeye. Car rental giant Hertz previously rolled out similar scanners across the US to streamline vehicle returns and damage assessments, but the move drew plenty of customer complaints. The system frequently mistook dirt, road grime, and light glare for serious damage—and disputing the AI's verdict proved to be an uphill battle for customers. ![]()
