This is a photograph of The Beatles that almost no one—not even their most devoted fans—has ever seen.
Taken in 1962 at the Star-Club in Hamburg's Reeperbahn district and kept hidden for years by their manager Brian Epstein, the shot shows the Fab Four holding small vials of Preludin pills—slangily known back then as "prellies." Originally prescribed as a diet aid, the band used the stimulant to survive grueling, marathon night sets.
The active ingredient in Preludin was phenmetrazine, a potent stimulant now banned worldwide. In its heyday, however, phenmetrazine was wildly popular; according to biographers, regular users included John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, and Marilyn Monroe.
