The 16/8 eating plan, also known as "intermittent fasting," has recently become very popular. If all recommendations are followed and metabolic issues are avoided, this diet virtually guarantees 100% results—weight loss and even normalization of high blood pressure. However, it does have its pitfalls. These, along with many other things related to intermittent fasting, will be discussed in our article.

The 16/8 diet is a rather original and unusual way for many to lose weight and control weight. It involves unlimited food consumption only during certain hours.

According to American scientists, this diet not only helps you lose extra pounds but also lowers your blood pressure. Let's figure out what its magic is...

According to the 16/8 diet, you can only eat for eight hours a day (hence the "8" in the name), and fast for the other 16 hours. You can eat as many meals as you want, and you can eat whatever you want. Of course, for faster and more effective results, you'll have to give up sweets, fast food, and other unhealthy foods.

If you want to lose weight even faster, develop a workout schedule. You need to exercise every morning, for at least 8 minutes. It's such a small thing, but it will ultimately yield stunning results.

The effectiveness of the 16/8 diet is directly related to when you go to bed. According to nutritionist Elena Solomatina, if you go to bed too late, your body will become hungry and produce high insulin levels in response to low blood glucose. In this case, early in the morning, you'll crave something sweet, starchy, and high-calorie. Since insulin levels will be elevated, the food will immediately be stored as fat in your tissues.

According to the nutritionist, the best time to go to bed is around 10 PM. This way, you won't have time to get hungry by morning, and the 16/8 eating pattern will really have an effect.

Scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago studied the effects of this eating pattern on 23 obese volunteers.

The participants could eat any food and in any quantity, but they could do so between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. During the remaining 16 hours, they were allowed to drink water or calorie-free beverages. The study lasted 12 weeks. The results pleasantly surprised both the scientists and the volunteers—each participant's body weight decreased by 3%, and their blood pressure dropped by 7 mmHg.

To improve the results of the diet and provide the body with essential nutrients, include the following foods in your diet:

eggs;

lean meat and poultry;

seeds and nuts;

beans, peas, chickpeas, and other legumes;

low-fat and unsweetened dairy products, natural yogurt.

The above are fat-burning foods that are sources of protein, help burn fat, satisfy hunger, and promote muscle growth. To ensure the 16/8 diet is effective, it's important to include healthy foods in your diet:

bell peppers and tomatoes (rich in lycopene and carotenoids);

any cabbage, spinach, and other green vegetables;

apples, oranges, grapefruit, and other high-fiber fruits;

currants, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and other blue and red berries.

These foods are sources of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and micronutrients. Their consumption is essential for normal immune function and maintaining healthy metabolism.

To balance your diet on the 16/8 diet, simply include one food from each of the categories ("Health Boosters" and "Fat Burners") in one meal.

Naturally, it's best to limit your consumption of unhealthy foods. Especially avoid processed carbohydrates—sugar, bread and other baked goods, pasta, and white rice. Also, avoid trans fats—they're not only harmful, but also dangerous for the body.

Drink as much water as possible, as it speeds up your metabolism and satisfies your hunger. As for alcohol, to achieve impressive results, limit yourself to two or three glasses a week.

How to Avoid Breaking Bad

To achieve your desired results, the key is to follow the 16/8 diet regularly, without taking breaks. Here are a few tips to help you avoid "breakdowns":

Run from hunger. Literally. Go for a run, stretch, or do yoga—physical activity is guaranteed to reduce your hunger for at least the next two to three hours.

Chew sugar-free gum or brush your teeth.

Try an experiment. Start a timer on your phone and watch how long your appetite lasts. This will make it much easier to resist the urge to eat next time, since you'll know exactly when it'll stop.

Disadvantages of the Diet

The main drawback of this diet is that it doesn't work for everyone. Experts from the British Dietetic Association (BDA) are confident that the 16/8 diet will only be effective for people without metabolic problems.

Furthermore, some nutritionists believe that the effects of this dietary system are short-lived. Unless, of course, a person makes intermittent fasting a habit and sticks to it consistently.
