The Imp from Lincoln: How a Small Pest Became the City's Main Symbol (9 photos)

Lincoln, England, is famous for its majestic cathedral. In 1311, it overtook the Great Pyramid of Giza to become the tallest building in the world, holding that title for over two centuries.





But the cathedral is not only interesting for its height. An unusual tenant lives inside. And there's a curious legend associated with it.

The cathedral's interior is replete with intricate stone carvings. But one bas-relief invariably catches the eye of visitors.





High above a support column, a strange figure squats cross-legged and grinning maliciously. A small horned imp looks down on the crowd. This is the Lincoln Imp.



Many legends circulate about him. The most popular version claims that Satan himself once sent a horde of demons into the cathedral to wreak havoc and destruction. They smashed the stained-glass windows, destroyed the choir loft, and attacked the priest.



But then an angel appeared and commanded them to stop. One brave demon disobeyed and dared to fight back against the heavenly messenger.



And he was instantly turned to stone. And so he remained there forever, like the Lincoln Imperium.



Today, you don't even have to go to the cathedral to see him. The little stone imp has become a true symbol of the city. His image adorns postcards, keychains, and other tourist paraphernalia.



The local football team bears his name and has included him on their crest. And outside Lincoln, near the walls of Oxford College, stands a replica of the imp, named after the former Bishop of Lincoln.
