A pigeon named Sugar, recognized as the longest-lived member of its species, has died in the United States. The bird was born on June 23, 1981, and lived for 44 years and 72 days, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The average lifespan of pigeons is typically no more than 20 years, making this case exceptional. Sugar's owner, 77-year-old Duane Orender, called the pet his best friend and noted that during separation, the bird became very homesick and even refused food.
