A fire broke out this morning at the BYD plant in Pingshan, Shenzhen Province. Eyewitnesses shared photos of thick black smoke rising from the facility. According to Sina, the fire broke out in a parking lot where decommissioned vehicles not intended for sale were stored. There were no injuries. The fire did not affect the plant's main workshops.
Local fire services arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze. The fire damaged a building housing vehicles slated for disposal. The cause of the incident is still unknown.
The Pingshan plant is one of BYD's key production centers. There is no information about the emergency causing any operational disruption. According to eyewitnesses, the consequences were limited to damage to the parking lot.
In March, BYD sold over 300,200 new vehicles. This is higher than in February, but lower than the same month last year. At the beginning of spring, BYD maintained its position as the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in China, accounting for 22.8% of total retail sales. The company exported 120,000 vehicles.
