China is developing glowing plants for cities (2 photos + video)
An unusual development has been unveiled in China: plants that glow in the dark and could potentially replace streetlights. Biotechnologists have inserted genes from fireflies and bioluminescent fungi into their cells, turning the flowers into "living lamps."
Experiments have already yielded results: glowing plants have been successfully produced in orchids, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums, with over 20 plant species tested. These plants don't require electricity; they only require water and nutrients to glow.
The developers hope the technology can be used to illuminate parks, public spaces, and even entire cities, reducing energy consumption and the burden on infrastructure.
