What is this opening for? (3 photos)
Unusual elements that don't quite fit the familiar appearance of buildings of various types in South Korea can be seen. These can include oddly shaped niches.
What is their purpose?
In fact, they are a reflection of past conflicts or preparation for a potential war that hasn't yet occurred. These niches are intended to create firing positions. Their location and height are carefully calculated to control specific streets with machine gun fire and protect approaches. All of this was planned during the district design phase and built along with the buildings. Systematically and thoughtfully. These niches exist, but they don't require maintenance. However, in the event of war or a zombie apocalypse, they could prove useful.
