Mercedes Unveiled the Updated Maybach S-Class — Without Leather, But with a V12 (11 photos)
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Maybach S-Class sedan, which has been updated following the base model. The most luxurious version will differ from the standard sedans with a refined exterior and a revised engine range, featuring a V12 and a more powerful V8. New interior trim options will also be available, including, for the first time, a leather-free interior. Production of the sedans at the Sindelfingen plant begins in April.
The company distinguishes the Maybach from the standard S-Class primarily by its 20% larger radiator grille with new filling. The sub-brand logo on the front of the sedan will be illuminated. The Maybach emblems on the C-pillars and the three-pointed star on the hood can also be illuminated as an option. New wheels have been added: gold-plated 21-inch wheels and forged silver 20-inch wheels, complemented by a permanently upright central emblem.
In Europe and several other markets, the Maybach engine lineup will be topped by the new mild-hybrid V8 M 177 Evo. In the S 680 version, it will produce 612 hp and 850 hp, while the electric component will add an additional 23 hp and 205 Nm. This brings the new V8's output to par with the 12-cylinder engine, which the company will continue to offer in the sedan, but only in certain markets. The more affordable S 580 will receive the same V8 as the regular S-Class, with 537 hp and 750 Nm. The sedan will also be available with a 585 hp hybrid powertrain based on the V6.
The new model promises a more advanced version of the Airmatic air suspension, capable of incorporating data from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The leather-free interior trim, dubbed Stormy Grey, consists of Artico eco-leather combined with Mirville textile, made from a blend of linen and recycled polyester.
In addition to a more luxurious trim, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class interior will come standard with features considered optional on the standard sedan, such as a third display on the dashboard for the passenger and 13.1-inch screens with remote controls for the rear seats.
They are also promised integrated video cameras, champagne flutes, a 10-liter refrigerator, and power-operated doors. Adaptive ambient lighting will be able to respond to voice commands, climate control changes, stabilization system signals, and more.
