A StarSky Airlines plane carrying several dozen people made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft departed Mogadishu and was heading to Guriel, Somalia. While gaining altitude, it experienced technical problems and was forced to land in a coastal area outside the western boundary of Aden Adde Airport. There were approximately 55 people on board.
Eyewitnesses vacationing near Jasira Beach reported seeing the plane fly unusually low before skidding through the shallow water and coming to rest on the sandy shore.
Firefighters and airport security personnel arrived at the emergency landing site within minutes.
"The priority was to prevent a post-impact fire, given the proximity to the water," an airport spokesperson said. "We are relieved to report that all occupants were safely evacuated."
