A small plane that suffered an engine failure in Mannheim, Germany, made an emergency landing on a busy street. After landing, the plane struck a road sign and came to a stop. Numerous police, firefighters, and ambulance crews quickly arrived at the scene. Medical personnel treated the injured on the spot. Three people on board the plane were injured in the accident. Authorities said a disaster was narrowly averted.
The Diamond DA 40 D Star reportedly took off from Mannheim-Neuostheim Airport and experienced a malfunction shortly after takeoff. The pilot decided to make an emergency landing on an empty runway near the Hauptfeuerwache (Main Fire Station), located between residential areas.
Witnesses reported that during landing, the plane flew between two parked cars at the last moment, then skidded briefly before crashing into a road sign.
The accident completely shut down Neckarauer Street, a road leading into the city center. After hours of work, the plane wreckage was removed from the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown. Representatives from the Federal Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (BFU) arrived at the scene and began a detailed investigation.
