China's BYD Develops a Super-Powerful 1500 kW Charger (2 photos)

Chinese automaker BYD has developed a second-generation charging station with a capacity of up to 1,500 kW and a current of 1,500 A. The new station will be one and a half times more powerful than the first-generation system, which was unveiled in spring 2025.





There has been no official confirmation from BYD, and the deployment timeline for the 1,500 kW system remains unknown.

According to unofficial data, peak power reaches 1,360 kW at temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius and above. The second-generation stations add approximately 400 kilometers of range in 5 minutes and are compatible with BYD's flagship Han and Tang models.

The second-generation station features a T-shaped design with two connectors, liquid-cooled cables, and intelligent power distribution.

The energy storage capacity of a single station has doubled compared to the first generation, allowing for the sequential charging of over 20 vehicles.

The new stations support a 500-1000V platform, and existing first-generation stations can be upgraded to 500kW. The company is also developing a simplified version with a capacity of 200-600kW for a wider range of electric vehicles.

By the end of 2025, BYD will have deployed over 500 megawatt charging stations in over 200 cities across China. The company plans to build over 15,000 stations by 2026, together with partners Xiaoju Charging and Xindiantu. In December, BYD introduced a new feature in its app for electric and hybrid vehicle owners: they can now rent out their home charging stations. Users can use the app to agree on access time and price, which is expected to be lower than public charging stations. Similar services are already available in China from Nio and Xpeng, which also offer direct payment options.
