Chinese airbags have already killed eight people in the US (1 photo)
The country's authorities are warning that refurbished vehicles may contain deadly Chinese-made airbags.
In September 2025, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it had launched an investigation into the discovery of substandard airbags in the country.
When deployed, these airbags project metal fragments into the cabin, creating a serious hazard. While seven accidents were initially reported, five of which were fatal, according to recent NHTSA data, the death toll has risen to eight, with ten recorded cases. So far, all known incidents have involved used Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata vehicles.
The manufacturer of the faulty airbag inflators is listed as Detiannuo Automobile Safety System (DTN) of China. They were most likely illegally imported into the United States and used by small repair shops to repair vehicles previously involved in accidents. The company has already stated on its official website that it does not conduct business in the United States and that any of its products sold there are prohibited.
Owners of vehicles recovered from accidents are strongly advised to have their vehicles inspected immediately. If DTN inflators are found in the airbags, they should not be driven until the components are replaced. It is also noted that not only the NHTSA, but also the FBI and the National Security Agency have already been involved in the investigation.
