New cat caretaker at Kinokawa Station has taken office

In Japan, Kinokawa Station has unveiled a new stationmaster—a cat named Rokutama. The tradition of hiring furry employees began in the 2000s with a stray cat named Tama, who was fed by one of the stationmasters and became a local landmark, attracting tourists from around the world.

Nitama, who served for over 10 years and passed away in late November, took over the honorary position in 2015. More than 500 people attended the legendary cat's funeral to pay their respects to the beloved stationmaster. Rokutama now continues the tradition, greeting passengers with her adorable furry paw.
