Boston Dynamics unveiled an updated version of its Atlas android. Atlas is positioned as an industrial robot for tasks in manufacturing, from material handling to order picking.
At CES 2026, Boston Dynamics unveiled an updated version of its Atlas humanoid robot, announcing that it will finally go into production. Hyundai plans to begin mass production of 30,000 robots per year starting in 2028.
The first Atlas robots will be deployed at Hyundai's Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia. Initially, their tasks will be modest—sorting parts and other operations where safety and quality have already been proven. By 2030, the robots are expected to be used for more complex tasks: repetitive motions, heavy loads, and complex operations.
What can the new Atlas do? It now has 56 degrees of freedom (up from 50), rotating joints, and arms with tactile sensors. It can lift up to 50 kg, operates in temperatures from -20 to +40°C, and is waterproof. It changes its batteries itself and masters most tasks within a day.
Hyundai also announced a partnership with Google DeepMind, combining Boston Dynamics robotics with Google's AI models. Nvidia will supply the chips and software.
