Gorden Wagener is the man who has shaped the design of virtually every Mercedes of the last quarter century.
Mercedes-Benz has announced the retirement of Chief Designer Gorden Wagener, effective January 31, 2026. The press release states that the resignation is at his personal request and by mutual agreement. Company CEO Ola Källenius extends his gratitude to the veteran for his dedicated service.
Gorden Wagener served the company for nearly thirty years. Having earned recognition among colleagues and management, he led the development of the exterior and interior design of the R-, M-, and GL-Class models as early as 1999. In 2002, he was assigned to work on the A-, B-, C-, E-, CLK-, and CLS-Classes. The list of models he personally oversaw is too long to list; suffice it to mention the W222, SLR McLaren, the latest iteration of the G-Class, the EQ line, and others.
In 2016, Wagener was appointed Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG and became a member of the Board of Directors. In addition to automobiles, he also contributed to the creation of luxury yachts, helicopters, and luxury interiors within the Mercedes-Benz Style division.
Unfortunately, the commercial failure of the electric Mercedes has negatively impacted the renowned designer's reputation. The EQS and EQE sedans were criticized for their bland designs and overemphasis on technology at the expense of traditional luxury, although the high price was also a significant factor in the low sales.
Naturally, with such an impressive portfolio, this far-from-vintage styling master would be a coveted acquisition for any other automaker, if he hasn't already been one.
