A Unique Porsche 356, Owned by a Famous Musician, Sold at Auction (11 photos)
A unique Porsche 356 was sold at an online auction. In the late 1980s, D&D Specialty Cars built two of these cars—both commissioned by members of the legendary band ZZ Top. However, the final bid for the car was only $28,500.
The Porsche 356 Speedster appeared in 1954. It is distinguished by its simplified upper section. The windshield is lowered as much as possible, and the soft top is designed for protection from sudden inclement weather, not for everyday driving. Additionally, the interior was simplified, and the amount of sound insulation was reduced. The model was equipped with a 1.5-liter flat-four engine producing between 55 and 70 horsepower, depending on the settings.
Two modified cars were ordered in 1987 by Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard. The latter never received his car, and both ultimately remained with Gibbons. This is not the original: the body is made of fiberglass and is noticeably wider than the standard version. Modern brakes, wheels, and a JVC audio system are installed. The overall style of the Porsche 356 is preserved, but the replica is easily recognizable.
The 1.8-liter flat-four engine is fed by two Weber carburetors. The transmission is a four-speed manual. In 2019, the car underwent significant work, including an engine rebuild. The odometer shows just 13,000 kilometers. The car is registered as a Porsche 356, manufactured in 1955.
