A 77-year-old Buddhist monk was trapped upside down in a cave and was rescued several days later. He had no food or water. Luang Ta Somchai disappeared from Wat Thammasathan Phazavan in northeastern Thailand on December 7.
Volunteers and police actively searched for the missing monk until he was found stuck in a narrow crevice on December 11. Rescuers were forced to descend into the 30-meter-deep cave, where they found the monk upside down, with only his feet visible.
Luang Ta Somchai said he entered the cave system from the wrong side and got lost.
The monk explained: "I went through the cave but couldn't find the exit. I didn't have a phone, so I just waited and called for help."
"I'm grateful to everyone who helped me."
It took more than three hours to free the captive.
Despite the four-day ordeal, the elderly man suffered only minor injuries and was dehydrated.
Rescue officer Tawadi reported: "The monk was conscious when he was found, but very weak. He had scratches all over his body."
In October, a rescue team freed three cavers from the Dauber Gill Passage in North Yorkshire, UK. The men had been trapped for 42 hours.
The three-hour operation required more than 100 volunteers to battle rising floodwaters.
