A copy of the iconic McLaren F1 went under the hammer in Abu Dhabi through RM Sotheby's. The car, the 14th of only 64 road-going F1s ever built, was originally built for the royal family of Brunei, but has since changed hands numerous times, and in 2007, the supercar was extensively redesigned. The coupe fetched an impressive $25,317,500 including taxes, setting a new price record for a McLaren F1.

Chassis #014, which left the factory in 1994, originally had a bright yellow body and an interior trimmed in black leather and Alcantara. The F1 was a relatively short-lived part of the Sultan of Brunei's collection, moving to the UK, where it was briefly owned by a McLaren executive. The car was later sold to the US, where it also changed hands several times. At the time of its resale in 2006, the supercar's odometer showed 5,200 kilometers.

A year later, the then-owner sent the car to the McLaren factory, where it was not only restored but also rebuilt. The car was repainted white, and the body was modified with a High Downforce Kit, which gave the supercar the features and, to some extent, the characteristics of the F1 racing versions. It is believed that this kit was installed only eight times. The coupe received upgraded lighting, and the interior received a carbon fiber driver's seat and other trim. Finally, the F1 was equipped with a new exhaust. Auctioneers claim that the entire operation cost the supercar's owner half a million dollars.

Another noteworthy fact from the supercar's biography is connected to this rebuild. In 1996, the famous racing driver Michael Schumacher signed its door sill. After the repaint, the signature disappeared, but the car now bears the signature of another F1 legend: Lewis Hamilton.

The significant investment in the car apparently changed its owner's attitude toward the supercar, as it was driven much more extensively. At the time of the current sale, the McLaren F1 had covered over 22,000 kilometers.

The price paid for the supercar far exceeds the previous record, set in 2021. Back then, a car with less than 400 kilometers on the clock fetched $20,465,000. Even engineer Gordon Murray's most modern creation is worth less: one S1 LM recently sold for $20.6 million.
