A baby was born developing in its mother's liver (4 photos)
A Peruvian woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl after a fertilized egg implanted in her liver instead of her uterus. This is only the fourth known case worldwide, with a happy outcome for both mother and child.
In extremely rare cases of ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg can implant in the liver. This often causes severe internal bleeding, significantly increasing the risk of death.
At the Cayetano Heredia Hospital, located in San Martín de Porres, near Lima, an event occurred that doctors called a "double miracle of life."
Health Minister Luis Quirós Avilés announced that the 19-year-old patient underwent a complex operation to save her life and the life of her newborn child.
The newborn weighed 3.6 kg.
Experts say 96% of ectopic pregnancies develop in the fallopian tube. Only 4% of cases occur in the abdomen.
In this case, the fertilized egg implanted in the liver, and the fetus received nutrition through the arteries of this organ.
The situation was also unique in that the child reached 40 weeks of pregnancy, while the previous three patients gave birth at 36 weeks.
The mother gave birth to a daughter by cesarean section at the Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz Hospital in Puente Piedra. Afterward, she had to be taken to Caetano Heredia Hospital for a complex surgery, as the placenta could not be removed due to severe bleeding.
The mother underwent embolization using interventional radiology. The procedure involved closing the arteries that supplied blood to the placenta.
"The patient is out of danger, her condition is stable, and she is ready for discharge," a Ministry of Health spokesperson said.
Mother and baby went home on Wednesday, December 3. ![]()
