The FBI seized a rare Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR supercar worth $13 million (3 photos)
US federal agents have seized a 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR supercar. According to Carscoops, the car was seized during a search as part of the case against Canadian Ryan Wedding, who is accused of founding an international drug cartel. Only six CLK-GTRs exist in the world, and the FBI valued the seized example at $13 million.
The supercar is a road-going version of a racing car developed by Mercedes-Benz as part of homologation procedures. Only 26 of these road-going cars were ever produced, and only six of them were convertibles. Such supercars are extremely rare for sale. For example, in 2023, one of the roadsters sold for $10,235,000.
Ryan Wedding won the 2002 Olympic snowboarding title while competing for Canada. The FBI believes he later led an international criminal organization involved in money laundering and large-scale drug trafficking. The agency has offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture. However, it is not specified how the supercar seized during the search could be connected to Wedding.
The publication notes that if it is proven that the CLK-GTR was acquired with illegally obtained funds and the car is officially confiscated, it will subsequently be put up for federal auction. The auction is highly likely to attract the attention of numerous collectors.
