Hundreds of fireworks and a burning field: Ajax match disrupted by fans
The match of the 14th round of the Eredivisie between Ajax Amsterdam and Groningen was cancelled due to mass unrest by fans, according to the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) website. Fans began setting off firecrackers and other fireworks in memory of a fallen teammate, which led to a fire in the stands.
The game was initially simply abandoned, but even after 40 minutes, fans continued setting fires. For safety reasons, the referee ordered the teams off the field. The match was ultimately rescheduled for Tuesday, December 2, and will be played behind closed doors.
Those who cause such unrest are not there for the match or the football. Naturally, this has consequences. Those who set off the pyrotechnics will receive a fine of €450 and a stadium ban of 18 to 60 months, the organization stated.
