A touching story from Minnesota, where a couple who met in the hospital after emerging from a coma got engaged.

An unusual engagement took place at Regions Hospital in St. Paul: a young man proposed to his girlfriend, whom he had been treated with there seven years earlier. Back in 2018, 18-year-old Zach Zarembinski suffered a brain hemorrhage. He lost consciousness in the stands during a high school football game and was rushed to the hospital. Zach was placed in an induced coma and underwent a craniotomy to remove the left side of his skull. He tolerated the surgery well, his condition stabilized, and he regained consciousness nine days later.

Around the same time, 16-year-old Isabelle Richard was in a terrible car accident on the way to the grocery store. The girl suffered a serious head injury and fell into a coma, ending up in the same hospital as Zach. When the young man woke up, Isabel's parents were among the first people he saw. Zarembinski tried to comfort the grieving relatives, assuring them that their daughter would be fine. Within a few days, the young people were able to meet in person – the young patients met, talked for a few minutes, and posed for a photo in the hospital bed, after which they parted ways for six long years.

However, the parents of the future couple maintained contact throughout this time, exchanging details of their children's recovery. The young couple was able to see each other again in 2024, when the families decided to have dinner together. Isabel and Zach never parted again.

Seven years after their first meeting and his second birthday, Zach, under a false pretext, asked his future bride to return to the hospital, where he proposed to the jubilant staff and other patients. Now he laughs that he had a mercenary motive for the marriage, as many years ago, doctors removed the right side of his future wife's skull: "They're opposite hemispheres of our brains, so we complement each other. What I'm not good at, she's good at."
