A cat survived a three-week journey across the ocean in a shipping container (4 photos + 1 video)
Xiao Mao climbed into a container in China before it was shipped across the Pacific Ocean to the United States. Veterinarians believe the cat survived for three weeks by feeding on rodents and licking condensation.
Cats are often used to control rats in Chinese ports. This is likely how Xiao Mao became trapped.
After three weeks on the ship, the container was unloaded and sent by train to Oakdale, Minnesota. There, workers discovered the emaciated stowaway.
Local animal control officers captured the cat and handed it over to Pet Haven, a Minnesota charity.
A shelter worker explained, "We wanted to give her a name she would recognize. So we named her Xiao Mao—'Little Kitty' in Chinese."
Within a couple of months, the kitty gained strength and vitality.
She was even introduced to Prince the cat in hopes of a strong friendship.
Pat Haven noted: "They are gradually getting used to each other, and that inspires optimism. We hope he will always be her Prince Charming!"
