Honda Civic Type R Markup Scandal

The new car market has long since cooled off from the pandemic hype, but some dealers still can’t shake the habit of inflating prices while tarnishing the brand’s reputation. A prime example is the Honda of Fort Myers dealership, which secretly adds $10,000 to $15,000 to the price of every Honda Civic Type R. This isn’t just a guess—a salesperson at the dealership has openly confirmed the information, and that may not be the most infuriating part of the story.

Markup Practices Exposed

The car that caused outrage on Reddit is a 2025 Honda Civic Type R in Boost Blue Pearl with a black interior. It’s listed on the dealer’s website for $47,975, and there’s even an “Unlock Best Price” button that requires you to enter your personal information before you’re contacted. Don’t worry about providing that information, because on the same page, Honda of Fort Myers says that they’re not just selling cars, they’re “welcoming you into their family.” They offer to be your trusted partner in all things automotive.

The Terms of “Family” Relationships

How would your family feel about the price of a new car? Would they charge you $10,000-$15,000 more than the manufacturer's suggested price? If so, then you're probably already a member of the Honda of Fort Myers family. The only good thing about this is that the dealer openly states the markup when you're in their office or calling them.

A sticker posted on Reddit shows a whopping $15,000 in "dealer markup." They also charge $599 for all-weather floor mats and another $399 for door protectors. At least they're not charging extra for air in the tires yet.

Online Reaction

The online reaction has been more than negative, and it's not just the dealer. One commenter said, “This markup should be illegal, but Honda is doing nothing about it. It’s a complete scam.” Another added, “It’s called customer fraud because sales are down because of the same fraud!” But the strangest thing about this situation is something else.

The Acura Integra Type S is a better car in every way, with a suggested retail price of $54,095, and it often sells for that price or less with discounts. The lesson for consumers is clear: if you’re looking for a good deal on a Civic Type R, you’re better off avoiding Honda of Fort Myers. The lesson for Honda should be clear too: dealers like these should be banned from getting cars they mark up like this.

The story is reminiscent of a larger problem in the automotive industry, where dealers often resort to price gouging tactics, especially on popular models. While the market is gradually stabilizing, such cases demonstrate that some players are not yet ready to give up short-term benefits at the expense of customer trust. The comparison with the Acura Integra Type S also points to alternatives that may be more profitable for buyers, which could force manufacturers to reconsider their relationships with dealers.
