Production resumes after cyberattack

More than four weeks after a devastating cyberattack, JLR has announced that it is ready to gradually resume operations at its three UK plants. Production capacity will begin to return to normal in the coming days.

Key highlights

Official company statement

In a statement, JLR said:

Today we are informing our colleagues, dealers and suppliers that some parts of our production will resume operations in the coming days. We continue to work around the clock with cybersecurity experts, the government’s cybersecurity center and law enforcement to ensure a safe and secure recovery.

Government support

The UK government, concerned about the potential bankruptcy of 700 JLR suppliers, has provided loan guarantees for $2 billion. This money is intended to support the supply chain and must be repaid within five years.

Economic impact

Under normal conditions, JLR produced about 1,000 cars per day, but since September 1, production has completely stopped. The company’s daily losses are estimated at almost $10 million. The crisis has affected not only production, but also the dealer network - representatives have had to return to paper-based documentation for the first time in a decade.

Recovery plans

JLR has two factories in the West Midlands and a third on Merseyside. The BBC reports that the engine plant in Wolverhampton will be the first to restart, but it could take weeks for all sites to fully resume production.

Impact on brands

The production halt only affected Land Rover models, as Jaguar has discontinued older models to move into the premium segment and launch new electric vehicles, previewed by the 00 coupe concept this year.

Broader context of cyberattacks

JLR is not the only British brand to face cyberattacks. Late last week, the iconic London department store Harrods was attacked. The same group previously attacked British retailer M&S, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

The JLR situation demonstrates how critical the automaker’s reliance on digital systems has become. The extended outage affected not only the company itself, but also hundreds of related businesses, requiring unprecedented government intervention. Such incidents could lead to a review of cybersecurity approaches in the automotive industry and force companies to invest in developing backup production management systems.
