A former patient opened a "compassion house": he provided free shelter for relatives of patients near the hospital (5 photos)
In the Chinese city of Jinan, a former patient organized a free shelter for relatives of patients. 39-year-old Zheng Gang converted a rented apartment into temporary housing for families who cannot afford hotels while their loved ones are being treated in the hospital.
According to the South China Morning Post, the initiative arose from Zheng's personal experience. In 2020, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and during treatment, he noticed many relatives of patients sleeping on the hospital floor.
"He got caught in the rain, so he knew the importance of holding an umbrella for others," wrote one netizen.
In 2022, Zheng rented an apartment near Shandong University's Qilu Hospital. He furnished the space with bunk beds, allowing it to accommodate up to 15 people at a time.
The "Compassion House" offers not only housing but also basic provisions. Guests have access to rice, noodles, and cooking oil.
Zheng also works as a medical escort, helping patients navigate the hospital. This profession has become popular in China due to the need for support for the elderly and those undergoing treatment without family members.
Over the four years of the project's existence, more than 300 families have benefited from Zheng's assistance. Some stayed for a few days, others for up to a month.
Monthly rent is around 1,000 yuan. By comparison, a hotel room nearby costs from 150 yuan per night.
"He helps those burdened by illness see the light of hope," noted another social media user.
As a reminder, there is a dire need for temporary housing for relatives of patients in China, especially in large medical centers. Many families in the provinces are forced to spend significant amounts of money on accommodation during the long-term treatment of loved ones in capital hospitals.
