A tourist from Australia committed an outrageous act in a cemetery in Japan and earned the hatred of locals. Traveler Jones with the nickname LochieJones posted his video online.
It is specified that the incident took place in the Yamanashi prefecture. In the footage posted online, the Australian stops next to a gravestone in front of which there is a can of popular Japanese beer, and then opens it and tries the contents.
“Have a safe trip and rest in peace,” Jones says, taking a sip of beer. Then he burps and, leaving, puts his cigarettes on the grave. “I won’t leave him empty-handed, I have bloody Marlboros,” the foreigner jokes.
The video has sparked a backlash in Japan, as eating offerings is seen as extremely disrespectful in Japanese culture and akin to stealing from the dead.
“You’re going to another country to disrespect graves and steal offerings left for loved ones. Extremely depraved behavior,” “What you did is not just bad manners, it’s deeply disrespectful,” wrote outraged commenters.
After the incident, the Australian Embassy in Japan issued a statement calling on travelers to behave appropriately when visiting this Asian country. Meanwhile, local media reported that the police had launched an official investigation into Jones. And the Australian himself decided to apologize for what he did on his social media page.
“Look, if you think I desecrated your dead, I’m sorry. It was a mistake. I confess. I shouldn’t have shown it,” he wrote.
