From coding to the funeral business: how a zoomer found peace in funeral services (4 photos)

A guy whose life revolved around endless lines of code and burning deadlines in the tech industry suddenly realized that he had enough. He was burned out, tired of the chaos and pressure of the IT world, and decided to completely change his life.

Our hero is Leon Lim, he is 29 years old, and he is one of those who broke into the funeral industry with the energy of an innovator.

In 2020, he joined a government technology agency specializing in cybersecurity. Four years later, he was earning a six-figure salary and was ready to take on a management position. However, in 2024, burnout hit him like an avalanche: fatigue, cynicism, a feeling that life was passing him by. At some point, he realized that he no longer wanted to be a cog in the corporate machine.

He quit to join his wife's family funeral business as a development manager.

Funerals? Why not. This is an area where you can really help people, and not chase performance metrics. Working in a new field turned out to be a real revelation for him. Unlike IT, where every day is a race, the funeral business requires measuredness and empathy.

There are no deadlines to meet, no bosses breathing down your neck. Instead, there is the opportunity to focus on people, to support them, and to create a farewell that matters. For the first time in a long time, he says, he feels comfortable and fulfilled in his work.

But Lim’s IT soul won’t let him sit still. He sees how technology can change the funeral industry. Artificial intelligence, in his opinion, can automate routine tasks: from document management to creating personalized memorials.

His goal is not to replace human warmth with machines, but to make the process simpler so that employees have more time to support clients.

Leon's story is an example of how you can escape the corporate meat grinder and find yourself in an unexpected place. The funeral business, which many consider gloomy, became a way for him to regain control of his life.

He proves that even in a traditional field there is room for innovation, and most importantly, that a career change is not the end, but the beginning of something new. If you are tired of the endless race, maybe it's time to think: why not give up on everything and try yourself in a place where you will definitely not be bothered at night?
