Guejar Canyon: A Raft Journey Through Millions of Years (16 photos)
Imagine rafting through a canyon carved by time itself 500 million years ago.
The formidable cliffs of the Sierra de la Macarena, one of the richest places on the planet, loom over the turquoise Guejar River in Colombia.
This is part of the Guiana Shield, an ancient geological monolith that stretches across Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. The water churns under the paddle, there are rapids ahead, and all around are primeval forests, waterfalls cascading from above, and a silence that even civilization has not broken.
Just 10 years ago, these places were controlled by the guerrillas of the FARC, a rebel group in Colombia, and getting here meant risking your life. Today, people come here for adrenaline and untouched nature. After rafting, you can meet a spectacled bear, otters, or rare birds, and make a wish at the El Cerro del Indio Acostado (Lying Indian) cliff, as the locals do.
Between the rapids, there's swimming in the waterfalls and swimming in the crystal waters of Guejar. And then there's trekking, horseback riding, or rafting on inflatable boats. Every peso goes to the families who are creating tourism here from scratch.
This isn't just rafting - it's a journey into the heart of Colombia, where time slows down, reminding us of the eternal beauty of our world.
