Geely has released the results of an unusual durability test, which it subjected to the battery of the E5 electric crossover (known outside China as the EX5). The ZTZ-59D tank, which is in service with the Chinese army and weighs 36 tons, first drove over the battery assembly, and then over some components. It was stated that this did not lead to any mechanical damage.

Geely noted that the pressure experienced by the battery during the test was approximately 1.8 times higher than the safety limit set by future national standards. Subsequently, when examining the battery, the concern's engineers did not find any signs of potential fire or thermal runaway. There were also no bulges, leaks or other violations of structural integrity.

The unusual test was conducted ahead of the entry into force in China of new, more stringent safety requirements for electric car batteries. They will come into force on July 1, 2026, but Geely stated that the E5 batteries comply with future national standards and are ready for certification according to stricter standards.

The proprietary batteries, which have recently been called Aegis Gloden Break, are tested under 36 extreme scenarios, although only 24 are considered mandatory. The concern has already introduced a test for resistance to impact to the bottom into its test program, although it will not become mandatory until the summer of 2026.

Geely's future plans include creating the world's largest test lab for electric cars. The concern also plans to make some of its battery safety patents open, giving competitors access to its technologies.
