Fire Station 6 in Livermore, California, has a light bulb that has been burning for over 120 years. The bulb was simply turned on and it still works.
Interestingly, in 1924, Philips, Osram, General Electric and other giants united in a secret cartel called Phoebus to shorten the life of bulbs. They agreed that no bulb should last longer than 1,000 hours, otherwise profits would fall.
The Livermore bulb survived this conspiracy - it was made before this story began. It became a symbol of how technologies could be eternal, but instead they are made disposable - not because of progress, but for the sake of repeat sales.
