Wine cellars of Hercegkut: the underground kingdom of Tokaj wine (15 photos + 1 video)
The Tokaj wine region is located in the northeast of Hungary, where wine has been made since the time of the Roman Empire. The Transylvanian prince brought fame to these wines when he presented them as a gift to Louis XIV. The French king, enchanted by the exquisite taste, proclaimed Tokaj "The wine of kings and the king of wines." And since then it has become the main drink at the court of Versailles.
But the main treasure of Tokaj is not only the wine, but also the unique cellars, hand-carved in volcanic rocks. The most unusual of them are located in the village of Hercegkut, just 3 kilometers from Sárospatak.
The Underground Kingdom of the Hobbits
These cellars resemble the dwellings of Tolkien's heroes: low grassy mounds with triangular entrances, as if they came from the pages of a fairy tale. But behind the modest facade there are real labyrinths from 10 to 40 meters deep, and some even form multi-level systems.
Every family in Herceg Kút has its own cellar - they say there are as many of them as there are houses.
In 2002, the Tokaj region with its 28 villages and 11,000 hectares of vineyards was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. And if you happen to be here, don't miss the chance to descend into these underground treasuries, where the "king of wines" has been stored for centuries.
