A customer felt sick when she saw a rat embryo in lettuce leaves (4 photos + 1 video)
Georgia Rizzi was preparing to make a romaine lettuce lunch when she noticed something strange. The Brit said: “I had no idea. I had picked a leaf off the top to give to my rabbit Mochi and didn’t even notice. But when I took it out, it was so bad.”
The woman bought the lettuce from a Tesco Extra in Chichester, West Sussex.
“At first I thought it was a tomato as it looked red and soft! "I emptied the contents into the sink and was horrified to find a dead baby rat," recalls Rizzi, 34.
According to the information on the packaging, the salad was grown in Spain.
Georgia said: "A friend of mine and her 18-month-old daughter came over for lunch. I bought the salad to make into rolls. But when I opened the package, I almost threw up from the terrible smell. I was so terrified that I almost ate it myself and served it to my friend with a small child. I just wanted to burst into tears."
The Bosham beautician has now returned the salad to the store.
She said: "I hope this never happens again. I would like an apology from Tesco, what action they have taken regarding this incident and, frankly, compensation."
"Always check your produce and make sure you wash fresh fruit and veg!"
A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: "We regret this incident. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure robust quality control. Our lettuce is thoroughly checked at every stage, from growing to packaging. We have contacted the customer and issued a refund, and our technical team is working to determine the cause of this incident."
