In Romania, a tourist was hospitalized after an encounter with a bear (4 photos + 1 video)
A 72-year-old woman was driving with a friend along the winding Transfagarasan Highway in the Carpathian Mountains when she spotted a pair of brown bears on the side of the road. She opened the window to photograph the animals, when suddenly one of them rose on its hind legs and rushed at her.
“I just wanted to take a picture of him,” the woman told local reporters from her hospital bed. “We were in the car and were going to take a picture. And the bears came to the window.”
As a result, the clubfoot climbed out the window and cut open the hand of a tourist from Scotland. The victim's friend hit the gas before the beast could cause even more damage.
In recent years, cases of brown bears attacking people have become more frequent in Romania. The country is home to about 8,000 individuals, which is more than any European country.
Over five years, from 2016 to 2021, 154 bear attacks on people were recorded, 14 people died. This has become such a serious problem that some politicians have added initiatives to increase hunting quotas to their electoral platforms.
