A giant kookaburra is an unusual symbol of a company and a continent (9 photos)
This giant 4.5 metre tall statue of an Australian bird was erected to mark a specific event – the 40th anniversary of the local company Hydro Aluminium – but has become a universally beloved landmark.
This is one of many huge objects located in Australia. Kookaburras (kookaburras) or giant kingfishers are a genus of birds of the kingfisher family; they live in the tropics and sparse forests of Australia and New Guinea.
This interesting local bird is very popular in the region and is often used as a symbol of various events and structures. The feathered beauty can often be seen on posters and buildings.
The 4.5 metre high sculpture was made and installed in late 2009 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hydro Aluminium, a company operating in the area. The joint project between Hydro Aluminium and Kurri Kurri Tidy Town was created by Pokolbin artist Chris Fussell and is located in Rotary Park in the centre of Kurri Kurri.
