Capybaras have taken over a city in Argentina (4 photos + 1 video)
In Argentina, capybaras have taken over the city of Nordelta and are terrorizing its residents.
Nordelta was built in a swampy area — a typical habitat for capybaras. The problem with the number of individuals overtook the city after the COVID-19 epidemic. Due to the quarantine, the streets were empty, and the capybaras began to actively reproduce. This scared many city residents.
The animals destroy gardens and vegetable plots and run out onto the roads, causing accidents. One of the city residents, Pablo Pefore, said that many also see capybaras as a danger because of their size: they can weigh about 60 kilograms and attack children and pets. He admitted that because of this, he is afraid to let his small dog go into the backyard alone.
The Argentine government has proposed sterilizing capybaras with a special drug. Under its influence, they will not be able to reproduce for at least several months. Most of Nordelta's residents approved of this plan, but there were also opponents of sterilization. Instead, they propose building a nature reserve near the city and creating safe spaces for animals in it - ecological corridors.

Veronica Esposito, a supporter of this decision, noted that it is stupid to worry about gardens and vegetable gardens - plants can be grown again. She noted that she also has a dog, and a capybara has never tried to attack it. Esposito considers these animals too charming to try to reduce their population.
