A London, UK, dental prosthetist has been given an 18-month suspended sentence for secretly filming nurses. Amre Maghlad, 51, left a backpack with a mesh pocket containing a smartphone with a camera turned on in the women's changing room.

It was only weeks later that the clinic staff took a closer look at the backpack. They were horrified to discover they were being filmed. Two nurses subsequently quit, but continue to feel "humiliated and violated."

There are four victims in total, three of whom attended the sentencing hearing at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Friday. Sudanese-born Dr Maglad pleaded guilty.

Described as an "elite dentist", Maglad is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and has worked in hospitals and clinics across the UK.

Prosecutor Jessica Kang told the court: "Three nurses were in the women's changing room and one of them noticed a rucksack in the corner with an iPhone in the mesh pocket. On closer inspection, she realised that the tapes were being recorded. She reported this to her supervisor the same day. The police found three female clinic workers on the tapes, and also found images of a fourth unidentified nurse in her underwear."

One of the victims admitted during the hearing: "I have stopped trusting men and no longer feel safe. We all feel deeply offended and concerned that these videos were created for the purpose of sexual pleasure. He was convinced that he had the right to abuse his power."

"He haunts me in nightmares. I feel humiliated and dirty, I do not want to be touched or looked at," added the married nurse, who never returned to the clinic.

A second nurse who found the backpack said: "I felt violated in a place where I should be safe - at work. Dr Maglad was respected and trusted because of his status."

Maglad's lawyer John Howie told the court that the dentist's iCloud account could be made available for inspection. The convicted man has already been suspended for 18 months and is likely to lose his licence.

Howie claims that his client has no criminal record, he sincerely repents of his actions and is distinguished by exemplary behavior and positive character traits.

"He took action to solve his problems and sought help from specialists. He had to pay a considerable amount for a course of treatment. Several years ago, he had depression and was undergoing treatment. We all know how much his profession is valued in our country and how short there is of dentists," the lawyer explained.

"My client worked in three hospitals, he had a lot of responsibility. Colleagues expressed concern for his well-being but he had no idea what was happening to him. He had become isolated from his family in Newcastle while in London. He lived alone, worked long hours and only visited his family once a month. He was under enormous stress, which was compounded by the news that his relatives in Sudan had been forced to flee the troubled country and were now in Egypt."

Bromley Magistrates' Court

The court sentenced Maglad to 18 months' probation, ordered him to complete 40 days of rehabilitation and pay each of the three nurses £500 compensation.

Before leaving the dock, the dentist said: "I would like to say that I am sorry about all of this."
