While cleaning, a British woman threw away her husband's flash drive with bitcoins worth $3.8 million (2 photos)
Despite this monstrous oversight, the couple is still together.
Ellie Hart, an elementary school teacher, decided to clean out her husband's office. In her opinion, there were too many old magazines, receipts, and other junk there. While sorting through the desk drawers, Ellie gathered a pile of papers, used batteries, added an old flash drive, and threw out all this junk.
Meanwhile, the flash drive that the lady disposed of was her ticket to a better life. In 2013, her husband bought Bitcoin, and over the years its value has grown to an astronomical $3.8 million (£3 million). The drive contained the access key to an electronic wallet, which was lost as a result of Hart's active actions.
"I froze when Tom asked about the little black flash drive with the Bitcoin. We dug through all the bin bags, but we knew it was too late. We had this terrible feeling, a mixture of panic and hope, but deep down I knew it was too late. Tom was shocked. He didn't shout, he didn't blame me, but the silence spoke louder than words," says Ellie.
She assures that their couple is trying to save their relationship, although it is quite difficult. Her husband does not reproach her, but "the weight of the loss cannot be hidden."
“That money could have given us a better future — a house, a holiday, whatever we wanted — and I threw it away along with a pile of junk mail. It’s hard to get over. I keep replaying the moment I threw that USB in the bin in my head. I would do anything to fix it. I never thought something so mundane could be so valuable. If anyone keeps money or anything important on a USB, please label it. Hide it. Don’t make the same mistake I did,” Ellie laments.
