NBA star earned a removal for arguing with a female referee (5 photos + 1 video)
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid caused a scandal during a game against the San Antonio Spurs. The incident began with a foul that the basketball player tried to dispute with referee Jenna Schroeder.
First, the athlete attacked Victor Wembanyama, and then received a second technical for an aggressive dispute with Schroeder. The referee ejected Embiid with 2:59 left in the second quarter.
The player appeared to be about to hit the woman. According to the video, Embiid got so close to Schroeder that his chin touched her hands. The referee immediately signaled for a penalty.
The enraged player rushed toward the officials, but was held back by teammate Kyle Lowry, coach Nick Nurse and several assistants.
NBA commentator Stephanie Ready slammed Embiid's behavior: "That's a foul (on Vembanyama). You see him arguing with her, she's trying to calmly discuss the situation. He's coming at her like he's going to get physical, and I don't like that anymore. He needs to be contained. Now he's out of the game. I have something to say as a woman."
Embiid didn't seem to feel much remorse, returning to the court at the end of the game to celebrate his team's 111-106 win over the San Antonio Spurs.
Schroeder, 39, is in her fourth season as an NBA referee and has worked more than 100 games.
It's been a tough season for Embiid, 30, who has missed many games due to a sore left knee that has drawn ridicule from Philadelphia fans. He was also suspended three games for a locker room altercation with a reporter and missed another game after suffering a sinus fracture on December 10.
On January 22, Embiid became the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 or more points in a game when he scored 70 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs.
