Doomsday fish is found on a beach in California for the second time (2 photos + 2 videos)
This not very pretty fish usually lives at great depths and reaches really impressive sizes. They rise to the surface extremely rarely and their appearance is considered by people to be a harbinger of natural disasters.
The oarfish or herring king was first found on a California beach near the shores of La Jolla Bay on August 10. At the time of discovery, the fish was already dead. It was almost 366 cm long.
This time, another harbinger of Doomsday was found in about the same area. This specimen was more modest, all of 3 meters and also dead.
Scientists are delighted. The manager of the marine vertebrate collection at the Scripps Oceanographic Center said: "As with the previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will provide valuable information about the biology, anatomy, genomics and life cycle of these fish."
But the public is worried. Considering that since 1901, oarfish have only been found on the shores of California 20 times, you can understand the locals.
In Japan in 2011, before the catastrophic earthquake, about two dozen of these fish were found on the shores. In early April 2024, 6 hours before a strong earthquake in Taiwan, fishermen also caught an oarfish king.
