A year in prison for a "handbag trick": a couple in Scotland escaped from a restaurant without paying for lunch (4 photos + 1 video)
For the crime committed, the woman was sentenced to 12 months in prison, and the man to eight.
The publication notes that at the restaurant, the couple ordered two starters, three main courses and two desserts and were presented with an "impressive bill." After the man and woman ate, they went out for cigarettes without paying. The woman pretended to return and left her purse inside the establishment. The staff later discovered that the bag was empty.
It was established that the couple, using more than 40 aliases between them, committed a number of similar offenses since the beginning of the year. In total, the companies suffered collective losses of £1,168.10
"You didn't go to these places to feed yourself and your family, it was crime for the sake of crime - to see if you could get away with it. I have no doubt that, apart from the element of greed, you got a thrill out of regularly getting away with it," Judge Paul Thomas said.
He added that the couple's actions could have been motivated by "pure and utter greed". As a result, the woman, Ann McDonagh, was jailed for 12 months, while the man, Bernard McDonagh, was jailed for eight months.
