Californian studio Rein Speed Shop has fantasized about a possible M-version of the E31 coupe, equipping the sports car with many new components borrowed from more modern, charged BMWs. According to some estimates, the coupe has become about 200 horsepower more powerful. Despite the positive reviews from the public, the restomod will remain the only one of its kind.
A BMW 850i was chosen as the donor for the project, the standard V12 of which was replaced with a V10 from a BMW M5 E60. The engine was seriously modified, increasing its volume from the factory 5 to 5.8 liters - for this reason, the restomod was given its own index 858 CSL. The developers do not provide the exact engine output, but it is obvious that it significantly exceeds both the M5 and the characteristics of the standard 850i, whose units developed up to 381 horsepower. The engine works with a 6-speed manual and rear-wheel drive.
Some of the coupe's body parts were replaced with carbon alternatives. The sports car received, for example, extended fenders and a discreet aerodynamic body kit. It is noteworthy that the restomod developers abandoned the standard retractable headlights of the "eight", their place was taken by air intakes that improve air supply to the engine. An alternative exhaust configuration and custom wheels complete the image.
Along the way, the BMW 858 CSL acquired a seriously modernized interior, which was assembled using parts from other M-models. The restomod's interior now features seats and a steering wheel from the M5 E60, other instruments and a climate control unit, as well as an engine start button. In addition, the car was equipped with a media system with a BMW iDrive controller, which simply did not exist at the time of serial production of the BMW 8-series (E31).
The creators of the coupe do not announce the cost of the restomod, nor the reasons why they refused to assemble it, even in single copies to order.
